History of the organisation, how FINISH was established.

FINISH society was conceived of FINISH programme initiated in 2009 by an Indian-Dutch consortium comprising financial institutions, NGOs, MFI’s, academic and development institutions from India and the Netherlands. With focus on only individual household sanitation and microfinance driven partnership, the Society diversified partnerships to 60+ Partners across 10 states. Adding a mix of microfinance institutions, NGOs, milk cooperatives and SHGs as partner organisations. By the year 2014, FINISH Society expanded operations into School WASH, Solid Waste Management, Liquid Waste Management, Research & Study, Capacity Building, Health & Financial Inclusion.

a brief overview of the founders, (Who is the founder of FINISH Society?)

Mr. Valentin Post has over 25 years of experience in financing, enterprise collaboration, partnership building and capacity development in sanitation and solid waste management. He has managed the Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and Health (FINISH) partnerships, the WASTE Venture Facility and Guarantee Funds. Also, he (co-) founded several international public private partnerships as well previously acting as Finance Director of WASTE and Chair of FINISH (India) and FINISH INK projects. Besides his experience in The Netherlands, he has built experience in many countries worldwide, including Austria, Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Mali, Malawi, Nepal, Nigeria, Kenya, Philippines and Sri Lanka. In addition, he has been active in various sectoral and environmental policy analyses, joint venture promotions and wastewater treatment projects. And he is an enthusiastic guest lecturer in sanitation business and finance at IHE, Delft Institute for Water Education.

Vijay S. Athreye cofounded the FINISH program in 2009 with Dutch Government assistance. Vijay conceptualized and remained at the helm of the Rural Micro insurance initiative at TATA-AIG Life Insurance till he left them in the year 2010 as VP and Head of Rural and Microinsurance. Vijay areas of interest include Rural development with emphasis on Sustainability, Public Private Partnerships and Financial Inclusion. Vijay holds a bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and is a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (LOMA – USA) as well as an Associate in Customer Service. Before his tryst with the Insurance Industry Vijay ’s services have been deployed in the fields of Turnkey Projects in Thermal Power Plants, Wind Farm development, capital equipments, automobiles, consumer durables, charter aviation and Sales force automation software.

We have installed streetlights in the villages and forest areas, that helped in enhancing the efficiency of these villages and provided better living conditions to the weakest sections of society. It also enhanced the safety of women and children, protecting them from potential dangers, including wild animals.

FINISH stands for Financial Inclusion Improves Sanitation and Health.

FINISH Society is a multistate not-for- profit NGO registered in 2010 under the Societies Registration Act 1860. It’s main objective is to provide safe sanitation systems and promote WASH activities through financial inclusion.

FINISH Society follows the diamond model which includes all 4 stake holders namely Community, Financiers, Government and Businesses. This insures in inclusive and sustainable solution.

6. What does FINISH Society promote?

FINISH Society is working to promote sustainable and inclusive access to water, sanitation and hygiene services to impact health and environment.

7. What does FINISH Society do for promoting women’s issues under Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI)?

FINISH helps in  creation of self-help-groups and nurtures them so as to promote livelihood training and empowerment. It also helps in the formation of  Joint Liability Groups in order to get them sanitation loans to build toilets and helps in mainstreaming women’s group by starting small scale livelihood programs and provides training for the same.

8. What are the key programs of FINISH Society?

FINISH Society’s key projects are WASH in schools and communities, Solid & Liquid Waste management, Co-composting for a water ready future, Skill and livelihood development, Renewable energy (solar) and Knowledge management and Research.

9. Which regions of India does FINISH Society operate in?

FINISH Society is present in 14 states of India namely, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

11. What is the impact of FINISH Society’s work under WASH?

Through our initiatives and programmes we are impacting 6 million people with safely managed sanitation and WASH behaviour and over 165,121 children impacted through WASH in School programmes

 

12. What is FINISH Society’s impact on Solid Waste Management?

Under our solid waste management programmes, over 200,000 households are practicing segregation while some are doing recycling. We are managing 22,000 Tons+ of Average Solid Waste per year, and 3,600 Tons+ of CO2 equivalent GHGs emissions is saved per year combatting effects of climate change.

 

13. Does FINISH Society work in the field of water management?

FINISH Society is involved in river and lake cleaning projects. It is also involved in setting up constructed Wetlands for treating faecal sludge and converting it into grey water to irrigate farm lands.

14. Does FINISH Society work in the area of soil health?

FINISH is involved in reclaiming and strengthening soil health by natural means, without the use of chemical fertilizers.  It is presently working in regenerating soil health in 4000 acres of farm land in Uttar Pradesh.

15. How does FINISH Society help in improving the lives of Informal waste workers (IWWs)?

FINISH  Society is committed to mainstreaming IWWs by mainstreaming them and linking them to government schemes and provides them training in financial literacy programs.

16. How does FINISH Society empower IWWs and educated employed sections of rural and peri-urban members of the society?

FINISH Society has a dedicated, livelihood and skill training program, wherein social groups are trained and skilled to find suitable jobs in the industrial sector.

17. Does FINISH Society provide entrepreneurial training to social groups and individuals?

Yes, FINISH Society has a structured Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) wherein full-fledged training is provided to men and women for starting businesses in the WASH sector

18. Does FINISH Society run sports programs to empower the youth and help them provide jobs?

Yes, FINISH Society is in the process of training over 1200 young sportsperson under Tata’s Maithon Power Ltd in Nirsa, Dhanbad where 5 grounds and dedicated coaches train male and female athletes as well as for team games so that they compete at the district, state and national levels. Many of these trained and accomplished sportspersons find jobs in para-military forces, including the police force

19. How does FINISH Society promote the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ?

The Circular Sanitation Model mitigates climate change by converting human waste into co-compost for agriculture, improving soil health and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) , and SDG 13 (Climate Action). 

20. What is been done by FINISH Society in the field of Renewable Energy?

As update we have partnered with Sygnify Foundation to set up total   300 KW Solar plants to provide uninterrupted power supply to multiple rural location at Rajasthan, we have also setup 725 KW solar power plant to 3 district hospitals in Karoli, 

21. Have we tied up with a celebrity to set up a solar power plant in a primary school to ensure uninterrupted power supply?

Yes, We have collaborated with Hindi film actor Mr Pankaj Tripathi to light up a school in his village of in Gopalganj District of Bihar.

22. What steps dose FINISH Society take in achieving Climate Action Goal (SDG 13) ?

We have started an initiative to create awareness about Climate Action with School children across the country. We also manufacture bio compost and co compost to mitigate carbon footprints. This initiative is presently under way in Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

In have worked in Nandurbar in Maharashtra, Valsad & Navsari in Gujarat and  Dungarpur in Rajasthan
