Committed to raise blood levels to combat anaemia

Experts say that people often compromise with their health due to lack of awareness and poor financial stability. Taking a cue from this adage, OmniActive Health Technologies Limited decided to partner with FINISH Society to deal with this problem. Once the MoU was in place, the Omni Active-FINISH team decided to engage with village volunteers to start a health care program in Maddurubaragikannegala village in Karnataka. This program aims to screen women for anaemia and then set up medical camp facilities to remote villages and treatment of villagers at their door steps. The main objective was to focus on fighting anaemia & reducing malnutrition among the 5000 strong population including children and women. Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or the haemoglobin concentration is lower than normal. Haemoglobin is needed to carry oxygen and if there is not enough haemoglobin, there will be a decreased capacity of the blood to carry oxygen to tissues. This results in symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath, among others. Anaemia particularly affects young children and pregnant women. WHO estimates that 42% of children less than 5 years of age and 40% of pregnant women worldwide are anaemic. Anaemia affects both sexes, although pregnant and adolescent’s girls are most susceptible. Statistics reveal that one in every five maternal deaths is directly related to anaemia. The most common causes of anaemia include nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron deficiency, though deficiencies in folate, vitamins B12 and A are also important causes; haemoglobinopathies; and infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and parasitic infections. Thus to combat the nutritional deficiencies the health care team gave a brief account of the nature of the illness and advised them about dieting approaches to combat the problem.. On following a strict dietary regime like cutting down of salt, coffee tea, intake of fatty foods and increasing the intake of fresh vegetables and greens, every women-folk feels healthy and save around 400 rupees monthly expenditure on health. (FINISH SOCIETY –ILF) OMNI ACTIVE-FINISH SOCIETY FOCUS AREAS 1. Supplementary nutrition through community volunteers 2. Providing required treatment for grade 3&4 children. 3. Improving the weight of all children to normal. 4. Testing of HB BP Sugar level among women and adolescent girls. 5. Conducting awareness programmes. 6. Providing De warming and iron supplements through PHC 7. Encouraging the intake of nutrient and iron rich foods. 8. Supporting a clean and healthy environment. Winning the battle against anaemia Our aim was to reduce malnutrition among children in FINISH-ILF villages From 15% to -5% . This has been achieved by adopting new ideas with active support of Anganwadi workers and involving mothers of children (Mother volunteers) at Maddurubaragikannegala villages Karnataka . People were always getting sick and couldn’t’ tell why. It was at a health camp & health awareness program set up by FINISH Society ( ILF ) when it was discovered that villagers were suffering from low blood count . They also taught them about hygiene and further prevention from other disease. Now people here eat iron rich food and feel healthier and live better. Since they wanted the community to understand the gravity of the situation, they tied-up with JSS hospital and their team of three doctors who help during medical camps to check and counsel patients. Output: After successful intervention, medical expenses incurred by them have reduced drastically and the overall health of villagers has improved. Impact: – Due to the nutrition and health programs, the entire village is now better informed about the need for a good diet to lead a healthy and disease free life.
